Josh T Pearson embraced the local feel of his showcase at the HIlton Garden Inn, bantering back-and-forth with the crowd during his set. Half stand-up comedy, half melancholy folk songs, Pearson’s set had a strangely surreal feel to it that was appropriate for such an odd setting.
His first song — deemed by him as “a sad, sad song” — was a 10-minute marathon of guitar strumming and hushed singing. A fearless method of singing that wasn’t afraid of the silences between notes and lyrics. Pearson let his music hang in the air before picking it back up to continue on.
And, yet, these sad songs were followed by a 10-minute dialogue with the audience where Pearson told jokes to the crowd and solicited jokes from his friends in the audience who had come to see him. Telling jems such as “What’s the difference between a musician and a pizza? A pizza can feed a family of four,” Pearson had the crowd in stitches with his dry delivery.
Mind you, Pearson is definitely not a comedian, he simply felt much at ease in the room and had fun with those in the crowd — giving himself an opportunity to play with the audience instead of playing for them.
