“Side Projects” can often make the best bands.
A perfect combination of exceptional artists, laid back attitude and love of music, side projects can turn into the best of bands. Middle Brother fits that bill with Deer Tick’s John J. McCauley III, Dawes’ Taylor Goldsmith and Delta Spirit’s Matt Vasquez — often with guest appearances from other members of their “home” bands.
Middle Brother brought their wide ranging sound to the outdoor stage at SXSW, along with the prerequisite visits from guest artists. Rocking the crowd with songs ranging from the bluesy Blue Eyes, melancholy Thanks For Nothing and folksy Portland and rockish Me, Me, Me.
McCauley, Goldsmith and Vasquez kept the crowd ever-interested thanks to the grooving style and changes between artist voices — not to mention the beautiful harmonies when all three sang together.
Catch Middle Brother during their West Coast run as they finish up their current tour along the coast of California. Who knows who you might see along with them.
